A variety of health conditions are very common in this area. Many illnesses are caused by contaminated water, poor hygiene and poor diet. Most children live in constant pain and all ailments are untreated as healthcare facilities are unavailable.
Every year from August to November, homes are flooded and destroyed. Shelters are made from four sticks and leaves or a piece of plastic (if and where available) erected over a road or they have to sleep standing up in waist deep water holding children as water snakes swim between their legs.
Life in Mayapur is very basic as communities live together to try and survive from year to year. Families live from rice crop to rice crop relying on this as their only source of food. Education is scanty and health facilities don't exist.
Despite the extreme poverty the people of Mayapur are peaceful and happy. The children are gorgeous and all members of the community have big welcoming smiles despite the basic conditions in which they live.
Nicole saw many patients during her stay in Mayapur but the sustainable solution is the Mobile Healthcare Bus. The Rebalance the Globe Bus will deliver more consistent and routine healthcare covering more people and more villages. This mobile healthcare service heavily relies on our 10 community healthcare workers for it's success. These ten women have become the voice of thousands as they speak to us about the needs, problems and solutions needed in the villages of Mayapur.
15 Healthcare Workers along with Program Coordinator RtG, Project Coordinator RtG and RtG Health Supervisor attended Community Health Care Training organised by SRI MAYAPUR VIKAS SANGHA & REBALANCE THE GLOBE. This provided fundamental training in nutrition, hygiene and identifying symptoms of serious illness, such as Tuberculosis. This is a common disease in India with 1/5th of the global infection being observed in India. The magnitude of the problem in India is 2 deaths in every 3 minutes, over 1,000 deaths everyday.
